why is it that everyone who makes tutorials for blender are all hopelessly addicted to only using modifiers (and other bandaids) to get their work done? It's like they are allergic to editing face/edges/vertices in edit mode. I can only assume it's because kids hate seeing low poly objects, even though that's what a deliverable end product would need to be. Eventually all that beautifully smooth/rounded art will need to be converted into an actual mesh, and you'll get laughed at for having 20,000 tris. This of course is assuming that you're using Blender to get paid - meaning you're creating models for a game and not just rendering out cool things for fun. If you're delivering workproduct to other people, you'll need to have become intimately aware of the actual mesh you're working with, not an artificial skin that's placed over it. Optimizing the mesh also helps you optimize the UV map, which helps the game engine do basic things (like lighting the object) properly and acceptably. Unity handles meshes, not modifiers - you want a game playable, not crashing. So please, tutorial makers and tutorial watchers, learn how to use edit mode to get (nearly) all your work done. You might actually land a job in real life.

  • @totoru4ever

Excellent method! I've seen this video when I started Blender, but seemed more complicated that just using boolean. Few months later I tried to find this again and it was surprisingly hard, I had to scroll through dozens of boolean trick and tip videos, so I leave this comment here to help it go up. Creating arches etc as a separate object and joining them to cutouts results so much nicer meshes, after boolean the cleanup of manifolds took more time than this whole procedure. (I'm not an animator/designer, just design to 3D print).

I agree with your point about the add- ons available for Blender. I have invested in several of them, Hard Ops, Boxcutter, Decal Machine... along with several free ones, like Machine Tools and a couple others. I was also unemployed when I purchased some of these, as I knew this an important investment in my pursuit to learn Blender. It doesn't come close to the cost of basic programs like Liightwave, Rhino, and especially Maya!! Stop whining people, and appreciate what's available if you're serious about learning 3D modeling!!

I agree there where no tools for hardsurface modelling . Ton Roosendaal was the director but now things will change. I do not know if that is good. Thanks for showing you old howto model in blender 2.7 blender video.

17-18 years ago I found this program called "Blender" 1.7 or something so I could make game assets & real life construction visualisations, but there was not many tutorials around then(I think 4 or 5 basic ones), It made it so hard to learn & what was an add-on back then?... nothing, really it started to put me off 3d modeling so I decided to spend thousands of dollars over the years on high industry software & over the years watching people contribute to Blender, make add-ns & it became a more user friendly program. Thanks to people like you Josh its made it an easy & enjoyable trip to creating in the 3d worlds...Keep it up👍 Oh, by the way I had a mild brain injury & I am re-learning slowly.
